Bonnie Schneider

A large part of this is due to the fact that I completed my Bachelor of Music Program at Boston University in 1963, and also because I am an educator (Brown University, 1970-75), and have observed the liberal arts curriculum first hand (Brown University) It is my belief that it is important to integrate education and studies in art along with other disciplines. That's not so surprising for the ethnomusicologist (MA 1967, PhD at UCLA)! The program in ethnomusicology that I joined at UC Berkeley (from 1975-1976) is a good fit in a department of music at a College of Letters and Science. Being able to explore multiple interests is something I really appreciate. It is a great pleasure to be able to impart knowledge and expertise to graduate and undergraduate students. I am the and the author of three volumes: Music in India: the Classical Traditions; Thinking Musically and Music in Japan, Experiencing Cultural Expression and Music. Thereafter, I'll switch between academic activities and periods of administrative tasks (I am Chair of Department of Music from 1983 through 1988, and Dean of undergraduate Advising between 1992 and 1998, as well as Chair of College of Letters and Science Deans 1994-98; Chair of Group of Asian Studies since 1999 and am now back as Chair of Department of Music).
